What are epigenetics and nutrigenomics?
For many years, the idea that genes drive disease has reigned supreme in the medical community. However, a growing body of research indicates that genes are NOT our destiny. In fact, researchers estimate that genes cause only around 10 percent of disease and that our diet, lifestyle, and other environmental influences drive the remaining percent. This profound discovery means that the dietary and lifestyle choices we make on a daily basis have the power to either promote disease or, conversely, prevent illness and help us live long healthy lives! The study of the modification of gene expression by environmental inputs, without changing the genetic code itself, is referred to as epigenetics.
Biochemically speaking, epigenetic mechanisms include processes such as DNA methylation and histone acetylation. These processes are regulated by inputs from our environment such as nutrition, toxic exposures, infection, stress, and gut dysbiosis. The study of the interaction between our genes and nutrition is referred to as nutrigenomics. Nutrigenomics has exploded in popularity in recent years, and for good reason; it provides people with self-empowering information about their genetics that they can use to guide their diet choices and create optimal health.
Genes are not your destiny, but they are your blueprint
How do we go about epigenetically improving our health? I believe the answer lies in genomic testing and customized nutritional and lifestyle interventions designed to fit the unique needs of an individual. Genomic testing reveals variations in genes that may be adversely impacting your health. Many of the genetic variations revealed by genomic testing are amenable to nutrition and lifestyle interventions. I have been studying genomic testing and nutrigenomics for a couple years, and am very excited to announce that I'm now offering genomic testing and nutrigenomic counseling through my clinical nutrition practice! The genetic report I offer includes sections on digestion, the methylation cycle, hormone health, neurotransmitters and mental health, inflammation and antioxidant protection, detoxification, DNA protection and repair, and cardiovascular health and athletic performance. The report is a "blueprint" for helping you navigate your genetics and build lifelong optimal health.
I have personally undergone genomic testing and made dietary and lifestyle changes based on the results. These changes have been transformative in my own healing journey, helping me not only recover from Lyme disease but create a healthier, happier body and mind. If you are interested in learning more about DNA testing and my nutrigenomic counseling services, schedule a free 15-minute consult with me! In the consult, I will give you more details about the genomic testing process and how I use the results of genomic testing to empower you in your journey to optimal health.
